Self-doubt is the nike off white number onekiller of confidence. Pessimistic or perfectionistic athletes tend to have habitual doubt, which if left to run wild can be a distraction, at the least, and cut off any confident-related thoughts. Some athletes even start doubting before they get in the game or begin the competition. How can we win today against this team? However, most athletes struggle with doubt after making a mistake or performing poorly in competition. When you let doubt run rampant and unchecked, it undermines confidence. The goal every day should be to overcome the negative influence of doubt by turning it into statements of confidence. I teach athletes to learn how to fight the doubt and take back control of their own self-confidence! That is why its called selfconfidence. Confidence does not happen by chance or luck. Confidence comesfrom achieving success and thinking in ways that will give the bestchance for success to happen.
Maybe Tiger is successful because of his ability to come from behind and close better than anyone. Maybe Tiger is so good because he can achieve a zone focus on command under extreme pressure. Maybe Tiger is so successful because he simply thinks he can win every time he plays. nike air max 97 Likely, it is all of the above! However, what really separates champions, such as Tiger Woods, Maria Sharapova, and Brett Favre, from the rest of the competitors is unwavering self-confidence. Tiger has tons of confidence that developed from hours and hours of training, superior coaching, and much past success. But he also thinks in ways that support his confidence. You may not have the luxury of Tiger-like success nike vapormax to bolster your confidence, but you can get the best coaching and train harder than anyone else in your sport.
Over the last 15 years, I have worked with athletes who possess both high and low levels of confidence. What allows one athlete to have a brick wall of confidence and another athlete to have a Lego wall of confidence? One explanation is self-image. Confident athletes have a positive athletic self-image. For example, when I asked Masters' Champion Larry Mize about what makes a great putter great, he said that great putters believe they are the best putters in the world. The most confident athletes in sports do not just have tons of confidence. They also have sturdy levels of confidence built on years of success, instead of fragile confidence based only on the last failed nike women shoes or successful performance.
Missing shots, double faulting, and losing an important game happen often in the sports world and become a thorn in many athlete's mind. In some cases these thoughts continue for the remainder of the competition because the athlete can't stop dwelling on the error or missed opportunity. I am sure you have made some mistakes in your sports career that you were unable to quickly forget. You carried a critical mistake with you for most the competition. Either you did not enjoy your day, or were too busy beating yourself up to help yourself or your team. Dwelling on errors is the number one distraction for athletes today. You cannot play in the present moment (a quality of the zone), if your mind is stuck on a missed opportunity or faulty performance.
No one is perfect, but you can learn the mental strategies that will help you get there more often! What really is the zone? The zone is simply a mental state of total involvement in the present moment. I like the word immersedas it indicates you lose yourself (or your sense of self) when you perform, which is how some athletes describe the zone. Being in the zone is a state of total involvement in a task without the mental burden or worry, doubt, or fear about results. So, if the zone is that simple, why can't athletes achieve this mindset every time they hit the court or step on the diamond? Many of the top athletes do -Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, and Maria Sharapova, for example.
The top athletes simply are less distracted when they need tohit a good shot, make a critical first down, or nail an important routine. They do not get caught up in the moment of intense pressure. Champion athletes are able to go deeper into an execution nike huarache focus. They are able to focus only on what's important to successful performance. Somehow the intensity of the moment spurs them to focus better in these situations. If you saw the "Soul of a Champion" series on Versus network, NY Yankee's Relief Pitcher, Mariano Rivera, talked about his ability to focus during a game and not pay attention to the potential distractions. "I don't worry about things I can't control. Going into a game, I do not worry about 50,000 fans screaming or booing me. I focus on one thing only - get three guys out, "Mariano Rivera said. |
